Mensingebos
Under the Linden is located on the edge of the Mensinge forest, so a walk through this beautiful forest cannot be missed. The Forestry Commission has set out a fun 7-plus-kilometre pole route that takes you past all the highlights of the Mensingebos. First, you are introduced to the Sterrebos, where all paths are designed with a ruler. These lead you to a very special piece of water management. The fish ladder in the Lieversche Diep. You can hear the water from metres away and if you are lucky you can see the fish swimming.
The signposted route takes you along wide tree-lined avenues and winding forest paths to the last stretch of heathland in the Mensinge Forest. Here land goats keep the grass short and birch trees don't stand a chance. Via the large pond in the woods, a favourite swimming spot for dogs, you walk quietly back to Roden's Brink. Hiking around Roden starts in the Mensingebos.
Ommetje Sterrebos
Within 10 minutes you can walk from Under the Linden to the Star Forest. Here you can take a nice walk of about 2.5 kilometres. Ideal if you want to stretch your legs after dinner or if you just want to go for a short walk after breakfast before heading home again.
The Sterrebos was probably laid out around 1700, making it the oldest part of the Mensinge forest. The forest owes its name to the pattern visible from above in the footpaths. This is because the eight paths that converge in the middle of the forest form a star. This is not entirely coincidental, as the Sterrebos belongs to the former territory of Mensinge estate. The forest was mostly used for hunting; because all the paths converge in the middle, hunters could see the hunted game crossing and kill it more easily.

Knapsack route Lieveren - Roderesch
For the hiker who likes a bit more mileage, we recommend the Knapsack Route Lieveren-Roderesch. With 17 kilometres, you have a nice day trip ahead of you and get to know the beautiful surroundings of Roden. Knapsack routes have been a household name in Drenthe for years. They are hiking routes with an average distance of 15 kilometres and offer a guarantee of the most beautiful, unknown hiking trails between small villages in Drenthe.
The Knapsack Route Lieveren-Roderesch introduces you to the Drenthe villages Lieveren, Roderesch, Steenbergen and Alteveer. Along the way, you walk through the Mensinge forest, along the Lieversche Diep and through the Noorderduinen. Naturally, a hunebed cannot be missed on a walk through Drenthe. So pack that knapsack and be surprised by this beautiful walking route.
The Drenthe Trail
Get to know the oldest regional path in the Netherlands: the Drenthepad. In 329 kilometres, hikers will see all corners of the province of Drenthe. During the Drenthepad, you will also walk through Roden and the Mensinge forest. Onder de Linden is therefore the perfect base or resting place for hikers on the Drenthepad.
The Drenthepad can be walked in both directions and the stage that leads through Roden is stage number 7, from Roderesch to Peizerwold. Quite a distance of over 25 kilometres, leading you through the beautiful Mensinge forest, via the Lieversche Diep to the Brink in Roden. Time for coffee at Onder de Linden!
